Outreach Introduction

The Department of Biological Sciences organizes regular activities to engage students and the public with their diverse knowledge and experience to promote awareness of life sciences in Singapore. Through its Outreach program, DBS aims to:

  1. Introduce our teaching and research activities to the young generation of students in secondary schools and junior colleges and to cultivate and develop their interest in life sciences.
  2. Communicate with the public and share with them first-hand information in frontier areas of life sciences.
  3. Maintain contact with alumni with the important objective of soliciting feedback to improve the life sciences curriculum and education in NUS.

The Outreach program includes such activities as seminars, laboratory visits, field trips and workshops. Our members also participate in local and international outreach activities organized by the International Relation Office and by the Faculty of Science to promote the university and the faculty. These activities include interaction with distinguished visitors from overseas universities, visits to educational institutions abroad, career and educational exhibitions, invited talks to schools and junior colleges, workshops and camps for pre-university students, mentorship programs for school and junior college students, and dialog with teachers. The department also hosts conferences, sometimes in conjunction with reputable overseas universities, through which staff members and students develop close interactions with renowned scientists in the world.

Involvement in the Singapore Biology Olympiad and the International Biology Olympiad.

The department plays a vital role in the organization of the Singapore Biology Olympiad in conjunction with the Singapore Institute of Biology, National Institute of Education and Ministry of Education. Members of the department are also actively involved in training junior college students who represent Singapore at the International Biology Olympiad. These students get to interact with our dedicated members and learn more on topics outside their regular classroom curriculum. Through such training activities, we help identify, nurture and groom young talents in Singapore. Since our first participation in 2001, Team Singapore has done extremely well. In 2012, Singapore had the honor of hosting the event and the home team’s four participants all garnered Gold Awards. The tremendous success of four Gold Awards was repeated in 2013 at the IBO hosted in Switzerland and four Gold Awards in Vietnam last year (our team clinched the first and third golds).
