30 Dec - Dr Low Boon Chuan's graduate student, Lua Bee Leng was recently awarded the American Society for Cell Biology Norton Gilula Memorial Award for the best undergraduate and Graduate Research. The award was earlier announced in the Society newsletter (front cover) and officially awarded in the Annual Meeting recently. This is in addition to her winning the ASBMB (American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and the BioScience (UK) Travel Awards and Bursary earlier this year. Quite a rare treat. Her work on cell dynamics control has seen publications in the Molecular Biology of the Cell, Biochemical Society Transactions, FEBS Letters (Review article; in press), and another article under revision in a premium journal.

17 Dec - Dr Li Daiqin and his graduate student, Seah Wee khee's presented their results on the ecological impacts of transgenic GFP zebrafish using sexual seletion experiments in Biology in Asia International Conference held in Singapore 7 Dec 04.. The news has been reported in Science Now by AAAS..>>more

16 Dec - Sodhi et al has published a cover page article in Trends in Ecology and Evolution (TREE), a top-notched journal in Biodiversity.

8 Dec - RM Kini's paper in Toxicon (official journal of the International Society on Toxinology) was the most cited paper in that Journal with 200 citations as of February 2004. This paper since has been cited more than 220 times! >> more

20 Oct - NUS and Chinese Universities jointly organise 5th SINO-SINGAPORE CONFERENCE ON LIFE SCIENCES AND BIOTECHNOLOGY, Wuhan University, 20 - 22 OCTOBER 2004

A 11-member delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS), led by Professor Lai Choy Heng, NUS Vice Provost and Associate Professor Tan Eng Chye, Dean of the Faculty of Science, attended the 5th Sino-Singapore Conference on Life Sciences and Biotechnology in Wuhan from 20 to 22 October 2004. The conference was jointly organised by Wuhan University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University and National University of Singapore and was held at the College of Life Sciences, Wuhan University. >> more

27 Aug - Blueprint Asia Announces Collaboration with the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases. Collaboration will facilitate research and drug discovery related to neglected diseases that burden the Asia-Pacific region. The Blueprint Initiative Asia Pte. Ltd. (Blueprint Asia), housed at the Department of Biological Sciences, announced that it is collaborating with the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) to further the company's research into dengue fever, a debilitating infectious disease. read about it...

22 Jul - Singapore made news in the 15th International Biology Olympiad!! The International Biology Olympiad is a yearly event and Singapore has taken part since 2001. This year we broke our own record and made it to the top for individual and for overall team, we came in 2nd with 2 Gold and 2 Silver Medals! >> more

5 Jul - NUS researcher wants to stop bacteria from attacking us
Lianhe Zaobao, 5th July 2004, featured Associate Professor Leung Ka Yin's, Department of Biological Sciences, research on how bacteria can attack human beings through syringe-like mechanism

5 Jul - Dr Ruth O'Riordan's graduate student, Ms Lee Wan Jean (who is on one of the President's graduate fellowships), has just returned from giving her first ever oral presentation at an international conference. The conference was the 6th International Larval Biology Conference in Hong Kong and she has just been informed that she got the First Runner Up of the Best Student Oral Presentation. She will receive a Certificate of Award together with the cash prize of HK$500. Well done!

5 Jul - "Allergy-busting doctor gets Youth Award, now wants to seek cure for asthma" - 'Today" newspaper article covering the event at the Istana on 4 July whereby Dr Chew Fook Tim was honoured at the Singapore Youth Awards (SYA) 2004, for his contributions towards the control and diagnosis of allergic diseases.>>
