This series of conferences arose from an MOU for Trilateral Collaborative Research Agreement among the Department of Biological Sciences of Tsinghua University, Xiamen University and the National University of Singapore which was signed on March 27-28, 2000 in Singapore during which the inaugural Sino-Singapore conference was held in NUS. The trilateral research agreement supports joint research projects among the three partner universities that include funding for joint research projects, short-term attachment and exchange of academic staffs and graduate students, organization of conferences and teaching activities of Structural Biology of NUS staff at Xiamen University.

Since then, seven more scientific conferences on promoting research interactions have been organized in Tsinghua University (year 2001) and Xiamen University (year 2002), National University of Singapore (year 2003), Wuhan University (2004), Fudan university (2005) and Nankai University (2006).

At the 4th Trilateral Conference in 2003 held in NUS, invitations were extended to prominent scientists from Fudan University, Peking University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Nankai University and Wuhan University to participate in the conference and hence expanded the number of participating universities to a total of 12 as mentioned above.
