China National Excellent Overseas Graduate Award 2008

Two of our DBS graduate students (Mr.Jiang Jianming supervised by Adj A/P Ng Huck Hui, and Mr Liu Chang supervised by A/P Yu Hao and Professor Prakash Kumar) have won the most prestigious National Excellent Overseas Graduate Award 2008 (5K US$) from China Scholarship Council.

This award confers national honour upon Chinese students who are currently studying overseas and have attained outstanding achievements in the area of science and technology. Because selection of the winners is only based on research achievement compared at the international level, this award has been an important indicator for Chinese government and students to select universities that can provide world-class training of graduate students since 2003.

In 2008 China Embassy in Singapore recommended 12 students (8 from NUS and 4 from NTU), and all of them were eventually selected to win this award. In this round, China government selected 305 awardees from 458 excellent candidates recommended from 27 countries. NUS (with 8 awardees) is the best university among the list (Harvard 3, Stanford 3, Caltech 3, UC Berkeley 5, Cambridge 4, Tokyo 5). This achievement clearly shows NUS and our Department's strength in research and graduate training, and would definitely facilitate our further recruitment of top Chinese students.
