DBS Graduate student Mahesh Uttamchandani has been awarded the Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize AY2007/2008 for the Best PhD thesis in the Natural Sciences. The Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize was donated in 2005 by Professor Wang Gungwu to recognize the research achievements of graduate students. A medal and cash prize of $5,000 was awarded for the best PhD thesis in the Natural Sciences (including School of Computing, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Engineering, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Faculty of Science).

Another 2 papers has been selected for Faculty of 1000 Biology. Faculty of 1000 Biology is an award-winning online service that highlights and evaluates the most interesting papers published in the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of over 2000 of the world's top researchers.

NUS Quality Service Award 2007 winner, Prof Lim Tit Meng, stood out among the winners as an academic who went the extra mile to make a difference to students outside the University. The former Vice-Dean at Faculty of Science (now seconded to the Singapore Science Centre as Assistant Chief Executive) has helped to promote learning of life science as a consultant in various secondary schools and junior colleges, and voluntarily led the International Biology Olympiad to success for several years. Not forgetting his students in NUS, he has also helped to raise funds to enable needy students to go on exchange programmes... >> more

Our graduate student, Jiang Naxin (Supervisor: Prof Ding JL ) has been awarded the Chua Toh Hua Memorial Gold Medal for 2008. The medal is awarded to the Doctor of Philosophy graduate with the most outstanding research work done in Life Sciences, congratulations!

A/P Pan Shen Quan's paper (Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2007 Dec 11) has been selected for Faculty of 1000 Biology. Faculty of 1000 Biology is an award-winning online service that highlights and evaluates the most interesting papers published in the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of over 2000 of the world's top researchers. It was launched in January 2002 and already over 85% of the world's top institutions subscribe (e.g. NIH*, Johns Hopkins and all Max Planck Institutes). Papers are highlighted on the basis of their scientific merit rather than the journal in which they appear. Congratulations!

A/P Li Daiqin has been appointed as a Senior Fellow in the Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne. Congratulations!
A joint OLS Immunology and Structural Biology and Proteomics Inter-Programmatic Research Meeting was held on the 25th of February 2008 at the Department of Biological Sciences Conference Room. The objective of the meeting was to enable investigators from both programmes to explore 'outside their box' and seek synergism between the experties within both programmes.. more

Science & Technology-Planting the seeds of hope
NUS Assistant Prof Yu Hao, Department of Biological Sciences, was a recipient of the Singapore Youth Award (SYA) for Science & Technology in 2007. His expertise in the genetic engineering is fast gaining recognition.

Port Project: $20m to limit harm to environment
NUS Prof Chou Loke Ming, Department of Biological Sciences, was engaged by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to study the environmental effects of a new port expansion project near Labrador Park.

Clogged artery? Ticks might do the trick
Two NUS researchers Prof R. Manjunatha Kini and Mr Koh Cho Yeow, Department of Biological Sciences, together with a team of international scientists, found a substance, called variegin, in the saliva of European ticks which stops blood from clotting. The novel protein has potential to prevent heart attack or stroke arising from a clogged artery.
