BioThailand 2005
To create awareness of the progress of biotechnological R&D, A/P Gong Z and team were invited to exhibit the Transgenic Zebra fish at BioThailand 2005 exhibition. BioThailand 2005 was held on 2-5 November 2005 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center , Bangkok , Thailand . The 2nd Life Sciences Career Day 2005 was a very successful event jointly organised by Faculty of Science, Office of Life Sciences and Dept of Biological Sciences, in collaboration with EDB and BioSingapore. We had an overwhelming and good response from over 650 students, 20 companies and organizations in the Life Sciences area. The keen and enthusiastic participation of both companies and students helped us to meet our objectives; which is to create, develop and promote opportunities for both students and companies in Life Sciences to meet via an interactive platform>> photo gallery >> webcast

Poster title: A novel anticoagulant protein - Hemextin A, from the venom of African Ringhals cobra that inhibits clot initiation and its synergistic interaction with a three-finger toxin, Hemextin B

22 Aug Lee Wan-Jean, an MSc student of Prof Chou, has obtained Best Student Paper Award for an Oral Presentation of her research paper entitled, "Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Recruitment and Population Dynamics of the Intertidal Barnacles, Chthamalus malayensis on Equatorial Southeast Asian Shores" given at a meeting of the Crustacean Society, 18-22 July 2005 in Glasgow. She is also the winner of the Students' Competition At the XXIV Annual Meeting of the Willi Hennig Society Held in Norway, 25-28 July 2005

Awards galore for NUS students at prestigious Willi Hennig Society Meeting - A/P Rudolf Meier and five of his students from the Evolutionary Biology Laboratory attended the 24th Meeting of the Willi Hennig Society - Hennig XXIV - in Fagernes, Norway. The society is the publisher of "Cladistics" a leading journal on evolutionary biology.  A/P Meier was also elected a Founding Fellow of the Willi Hennig Society>>press release

28 Jul Kathy Su Feng-Yi, a graduate student of A/P Rudolf Meier, won the FIRST PRIZE for her Oral Presentation on "Evolution of Acute Viusiona nd Complex Prey Cathing Behaviour in Basal Jumping Spiders (Spartaeomae)" held in Norway on 28 July 2005.

A/P Benito Tan was elected the Vice President of The International Association of Bryologists (IAB) for a term of four years starting 2005. The IAB is a world organization of professional bryologists and researchers, and post graduate students, studying bryophytes, with a total membership of 600 representing 59 countries in all five continents.

Life Sciences Career Day 2005 - The first Life Science Career Day, organizing by the Faculty of Science, the Life Sciences Coordinating Committee and Department of Biological Sciences, was held on 21 June 2005.
