The efficacy of sponges (Porifera) as
biological macro-filters in removing suspended solids from semi-enclosed waters.
This project focuses on the use of branching sponges found within the waters
of Raffles Marina as biological macro-remediators. Experiments will be conducted
in situ within the semi-enclosed waters of Raffles Marina, using modular
remediation modules deployed within partitioned water runways. Water samples
collected before and after passing through the remediation modules will be
tested for suspended solids to assess the efficacy of the sponges in removing
them. In addition, sponge tissue samples will be tested periodically for
sediment solid loading over each experimental run to determine rates of accumulation
over time.
