The efficacy of the filter-feeding green
mussel, Perna viridis in removing pollutants from semi-enclosed waters
This project focuses on the use of the green mussel, Perna viridis as
biological macro-remediators. Experiments are conducted in situ within the
semi-enclosed waters of Raffles Marina, using modular remediation modules
deployed within partitioned water runways. Water samples collected before
and after passing through the remediation modules will be tested for various
pollutants to assess the efficacy of the green mussels in their removal.
In addition, tissues samples from the green mussels will be tested periodically
for pollutants over each experimental run to determine their ability to accumulate
pollutants in their tissues over time.
