Research Scholarship

Research Scholarships are awarded by NUS to outstanding graduates for research leading to a higher degree at the University. The Scholarships are tenable for 1 year in the first instance and are renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress. The maximum period of award is 2-2.5 years for Master's candidates and 3-4 years for Ph.D. candidates.

Award Amount

Research Scholars will be given a monthly stipend and a full tuition fee subsidy. For Research Scholars in a Masters/Graduate Programme, the monthly stipend is S$1,500. For Research Scholars in a Ph.D. programme, monthly stipends for Singapore citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and foreigners are currently S$2,300, S$2,200 and S$2,000 respectively.

Research Scholars in a Ph.D. programme may be eligible for an additional stipend of up to $500 per month upon passing the Ph.D. qualifying examination, which is normally held 12 to 18 months after registration of candidature. The additional stipend is renewable annually subject to good performance and duration of the additional stipend varies among the different faculties and schools

MSc candidate S$1500 / month
PhD candidate up to S$2800 / month

Research scholars may also be asked to assist as tutors.

In addition to the NUS Research Scholarship, outstanding students have opportunities to receive other highly prestigious awards such as President's Awards, Singapore Millennium Fellowship, etc. Several awards for best theses are also available for competition. Every year, we have several students who win these awards.
