thoughts from our graduate students....

'...I gained a lot... this department really nurtured me as an independent researcher and team player.' Zhou Shizhen
"After finishing any Master thesis in Poland, I was looking for higher education. And I heard about Singapore being a global life science hub. And also about the NUS, that it is an excellent university to study in. So, I decided to come. And my first visit to Singapore, I was highly impressed, not only by the University, but the exotic life in Asia, and Singapore, itself, as a country. We have the great opportunity to interact with many Nobel Laureates, and the writers of the famous biological books ....'Joannna Pawlak
" I've had a really wonderful experience here at NUS DBS, and in my lab especially. Wonderful colleagues all around. My supervisor who's very encouraging and approachable, and always smiling. He always encourages to think and think right, not just think. He always guides us the right way, asking us to cut down time on doing fruitless experiments, but to sit down and design the experiements properly." Syed Rehana

"For someone deciding to do a PHD, I could strongly recommend Singapore to study. It's a very high standard of education. It's very friendly atmosphere. You get a lot of support from your colleagues and supervisors." Alan Lowton
"The department had nurtured me as an independent researcher and team player. My aim is to be a versatile and all-rounded scientist, well versed in various aspects of Biology, and involved in multidisciplinary research.." Seah Wee Khee >>more
Leaving Brazil to come to Singapore to pursue my Masters Degree in Marine Biology has definitely been a challenging but positive decision in my life. I was very attracted to the fact that NUS offered very high quality training, but at the same time was concerned about the quality of life in Asia...Priscila C. M. Neus >>more
The whole working atmosphere and facilities here just amazed me! I realized that my decision to join this department was not wrong. My current work involves protein structure determination via x-ray crystallography...Dileep Vasudevan >>more
One of the deciding factors that tipped the scales for me to choose the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) was the huge pool of world class researchers who are excellent teachers. I wanted to focus on stem cell biology and was fortunate to find an established group right at my doorsteps. Leong Tai Wei David >> more
I truly enjoy my research life here: we have the freedom to choose our own directions; have good funding support; have many opportunities to meet distinguished researchers through frequent seminars and conferences; and from these opportunities, we also have a lot of fun making friends from different nationalities.Liu Yang >> more
