Southeast Asia is a region of  particularly high biodiversity. Therefore, biodiversity research is a very important here especially with accelerating habitat loss. The biodiversity program in the Department is centred on the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Researc (RMBR). The current research program of the RMBR is broad-based and can be divided into seven broad components.

Taxonomy and systematics
Phylogeny and biogeography
Molecular systematics
Community ecology
Ethology
Conservation biology
Adaptive and functional morphology
