Organisers of Biology in Asia
The Singapore Institute of Biology (SIBiol) was founded in 1974. Among its objectives are promoting the advancement, and facilitating the exchange of information in biology and its applications; encouraging the improvement of biology education and the training of those interested in biology; and advancing the character and status of the biology profession of biology and its applications. The National Institute of Education (NIE) is the sole teacher training institute in Singapore and was established as an institute of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1991. Its mission is to be a world-class university institute renowned for its excellence in teacher education and educational research. As part of NTU, degree courses are offered to trainee teachers that impart knowledge and skills in topics such as Arts, Science or Physical Education as well as pedagogy. The Department of Biological
Sciences (DBS) was
established in 1997 from the merger of the former Departments of Botany
and Zoology at the National University of Singapore (NUS). With redefined
roles and functions, and building on existing strengths, DBS covers
a wide range of research including animal, plant, cell and molecular,
and structural biology. Many of the basic research activities have
had implications in human health care, therapeutics, food security,
