Research Interest:

Ecophysiology of tropical plants

Research is actively focused on studies on developmental, physiological and biochemical processes in tropical plants, so as to understand how they adapt to environmental stresses (high light, drought, salt stress, high/low N, anoxia). The extent to which these processes are engaged in nature is also under study. Ultrastructural changes in plants in response to environmental stresses are also conducted.

Brief descriptions of on-going studies:

  1. Gas-exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence studies of fern gametophytes/sporophytes, secondary forest plant species, cassava and rice to determine photosynthetic performance and stress adaptation.
  2. Activity of superoxide dismutase in plants in response to stress conditions.
  3. Effect(s) of nitrogen availability on photosynthetic adaptation of cassava and sorghum to high light and cyanogenic potential.
  4. Crassulacean acid metabolism and its significance in plants of the humid tropics.
  5. Photosynthesis and growth of Acacia mangium.
  6. Responses of gametophytes of the mangrove fern, Acrostichum aureum, to flooding.
