Topic: How can math be used to understand nature?

Speaker: Associate Professor Ryan Chisholm

Synopsis:

How quickly does deforestation drive species extinct? What will the effects of climate change be on tropical forests? Will Singapore experience a dengue outbreak this year? These important questions in biology, and many others, can be answered with the help of mathematical modelling. I will talk about my research at the intersection of mathematics and biology. I will focus on an ongoing project aiming to estimate extinction rates in Singapore over the last 200 years.
