Synopsis:
This talk will present in the first part, the broad effects of how climate change presents multiple areas of risks for food production. In the second part, this talk will cover how science and policy are helping provide ways to manage the risks associated with food production in these scenarios. Heat stress, water stress and flooding and storm events have direct impact on yield and biomass of food crops. Water and rain significantly affect vegetables production, which have 90% water content. Shifts in areas of food production especially coastal areas, add another layer of risks in food production. Higher summer temperatures for livestock and ocean acidification for fisheries add increased complexity to the food production. Science and technology -based solutions combined with policies and organisational changes provide novel approaches to tackle the above risks. Non-GMO crop improvement strategies, improving soil properties to provide crop resilience, nature-based solutions for improving fisheries and livestock performance- all need to be thoroughly evaluated and suitable solutions embraced in the food production system on an urgent basis. This talk will provide specific examples for both the risks and potential solutions that the future generation of scientists and non-scientists can play a role in working towards more secure food production.
