CBIS LM Core: First Time Users

🔹 Pre-Training

Step 1

  • Unsure which instrument suits your research? Email Core staff to:
    • Discuss your project
    • Arrange a sample test on recommended instruments
  • If you know the instrument needed, proceed to Step 2.

  • Log into PPMS and navigate to the Request tab
  • Complete and submit the correct form:
    • CBIS LM_Widefield Imaging System User Registration Form: for widefield fluorescence, dark field, phase contrast, DIC microscopy
    • Laser Microscopy User Registration Form: for confocal, spinning disc, light sheet microscopy (upload OSHE certificate before submission)
    • User Registration Form for CBIS Cryostat 1850
  • Email the completed Risk Assessment form to Core staff
  • Facility staff will contact you to schedule training

Step 5

  • Complete pre-training tutorials
  • Prepare samples for training


🔹 Training

Part I – Day 1 (2 hours)

  • Hands-on training by facility staff:
    • Standard imaging protocols
    • Data export
  • Practice with your own samples under supervision

Part II – Day 2 (1 hour)

  • Reinforce skills from Day 1
  • Perform an independent imaging experiment
  • Learn advanced image optimisation techniques


🔹 Post-Training

  • Receive a post-training email with:
    • Details to join the Confocal User Contact Group
  • Upon validation, you will gain:
    • Door access to trained systems
    • Booking rights for confocal systems via PPMS

Note: CBIS reserves the right to revoke user access for:

  • Breaching facility regulations
  • Damaging instruments
  • Late or unpaid fees

Log into PPMS account at least once every three months to avoid deactivation.
